My 1993 Cherokee is having a deja vu of a few months ago where the check engine light was on for a couple of days and then it would barely start and no power to stereo/lights/blinkers..etc but engine ran fine at a higher rpm but when idled would die...
A mechanic told me I needed a new alternator and so I bought one and a new battery as well.
Now three months later I am having the same problem and the check engine light was on for a few days and then after work today it barely started on the way home and then had no signals when turning and then the engine started slowing down and then died...
I jumped it a few times and she starts up every time but then as soon as the jumper cables come off shes a goner and shuts off.
I really done think its a battery or alternator problem as they are both new and I could sure use an answer right about now before I get it towed to jeep and have them fix it for a fortune and probably tell me its the alternator when I will have the same problem once again down the road

does your alternator fuse blow along with a dead battery?

 

if the fuse keeps blowing there might be some kind of short somewhere it does sound like a bad alt. could also be an ecu issue that what did it for me when it idled like crap and wouldn't charge

 

I have never had to replace the alternator fuse...
But I supposed that could make sense but I mean how could it have ran for 3 months with a new alternator and new battery without having to change a fuse if the fuse was the case right? And wouldn't the check engine light stay on for the past few months because the light did turn off after I put the new alternator and battery in it.
I have an appointment at jeep on Saturday to get a diagnostics test but its a shame because I would much rather fix it myself like ive been doing so far. And its $100 per hour just to run a diagnostic which is BS

 

Check Engine Light will come on after several runs with the same issue. Maybe it was partially cured. It will shut off after several runs without the issue as well. Could be something grounding out. Check your alt. and battery wiring. Give it a good once or twice over before blowing money on the dealer (I understand your frustration though) Sounds dumb but look where you haven't looked yet.

I have a pretty strong feeling it is a wiring issue with the alternator as well and it would make sense that it would start up fine when boosted if that was the problem too. I will have to check it tomorrow because its parked on the side of the road far from my house
I wanted to at least get it home to play with it but she will not run without jumpers attached
