I always liked my tents on the ground, and staked down good. (Been in too many storms) Although some of the vehicle top, or pick-up bed tents are interesting.

always wanted a tent up top,i think it will work because the libertys roof is smaller than the cherokees, but ive never seen one before, so this isnt from personal experience, just a guess

i don't think he's talking a roof top tent. i think he means the tailgate tent.
like this one.
i think you should be fine with a couple inches. and i'm sure it will fit the xj no problems.

I think so also because the hatch for the liberty is larger then the cherokee
I see those tents for sale on craigslist every once in a while and think about getting one. (Not for the cherokee though, for the liberty)

nah, its so you can move some stuff out of the back and sleep in your truck and still use your power port for an alarm clock or tv or something. liberty have factory power ports on the right as soon as you open the back

I was actually thinking so when I get munchies in the middle of the night. or if I wanted a smoke I could climb into the jeep and avoid as much wind as possible.
Plus I figured if I'm paying for a tent I might as well get an option that I could possibly utilize. Stuff gets forgotten in the car all the time and nobody wants to have to put too many clothes on to get it.

So if you run into town, for refreshments. The tent comes along? I say keep your tent and jeep separate! (I've already been in a tornado area, while camping) We sat it out in a Suburban at time. Watched the tents fly away. Had to pull them out trees about 1/8 of a mile away, After it was done.

And unfortunately there wouldn't be any running to town where I'll be. I'll be camping outside Denver, CO up in the mountains usually only on an overnight trail run. I'm just getting tired of sleeping in the back of an XJ with my girlfriend. Sure it's warm but I'm 6' and my legs get cramped!

Wife and I like our tent, sort of the same thing as pictured above. Downside, the hatch opening is a bit short for my 3" lift on the ZJ, so the hatch won't go up all the way.
Convenient for setting up, and it is an adjustable strap to wrap around the Jeep. Certainly an overnight thing. We have a larger tent for longer trips, and a pop up trailer as well...
