Default Jeep dying need help!

I have a friend who just bought A year 90 jeep Cherokee with I 4.0l engine. It's a five speed. He just bought the thing but it it has I problem idling. Every time he put it into first and reverse it seems to have a problem breathing. Almost stalling to the point where it wants to die. It also jerks at the same time. Does anyone know what could be the problem or what may be causing this?? Please help!

So he just bought it and it runs like that? I'm going to go ahead and speculate that the previous owner probably didn't do any maintenance beyond oil changes... and that the fluid in your transmission has long been in need of replacement. Maybe even to the point of damage.

Of course there are also solenoids that affect these things. I'm not transmission savvy.

When we were listening to it the intake seems to be back firing. Would any of that have to do with it?
