Default Jeep died and won't restart

I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 engine.

Originally the vehicle had a slightly rough idle at low RPM’s that smoothed out when gas was applied. The Check Engine Light was on. I had the #1 injector replaced & an o-ring kit installed. I also replaced the ignition coil.

Driving it home I had problems: After about 6-miles the engine began to lose power when I slowed down for a traffic light and went dead. The engine would turn over but acted like it was not getting gas. I pumped the gas pedal rapidly for several seconds, held the pedal to the floor and the engine started but quickly died when I tried to idle the engine. I was able to restart the engine by pumping the gas rapidly then holding the pedal to the floor. As long as I was able to maintain 2500-3000 RPM the engine would continue to run without a miss. I need to add that every time it restarted it ran very rough until the RPM’s reached about 2500+. I towed it home with my pickup keeping the engine RPM’s over 2500 to keep the PS/PB functioning. When I arrived home with it idled in Park but as soon as I tried to shift into Drive it died. I was able to restart it by repeating the steps I had taken previously but this time it would not continue to run when trying to idle but would at high RPM.

Does anybody know what might be wrong. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

According to the mechanic, the fuel pump and pressure is fine. Certainly seems like it is not getting fuel though. I installed new plugs, wires, and distributor cap not long ago.

Check engine light is on due to an o2 sensor. I don't think this would cause the problem would it?

Thanks for the help

Is your fuel good?

I had water condensation in the gas tank I added additive 88xj.

Also I had a similar problem, once the gas cap was off 98xj but you said pressure is fine.

It is running so you just need to figure out how to get fuel into the engine. You did replace gas gap and tighten to a few clicks Right? Did this happen after tune up, if so Retune and make sure everthing is correct.

The computer may not be running timing effectively try Resetting and driving so it can program itself to run.

Look at posts on the computer it runs on data from the last 50 starts so if you did alot of work it may be running on past data that is incorrect.
