8.25 is the best choice. Be sure to get the u-bolts and plates. Easy to convert to disc brakes, too.

the 27 spline 8.25 from 96 and older jeeps will have c clips, but it will also have semi stronger shafts than the d35c so its a toss up.

the 29 spline 8.25 from 97 and newer jeeps will have shafts similer to a d44 (not as strong but closer) and yes does still have c clips, but is a much better choice than the 35

D35C DOES have C-clips, that is what the C stands for. D35's are available NON clipped. D44 is the ONLY non C-clip XJ axel. The 8.25 is better than the D35, period. The 97 and newer 8.25 is better than the 96 and older 8.25, due to 29 splined axels vs 27 splined. the 8.25 has a stronger housng the BOTH the D35 and D44. the 8.25 with 29 sp axel is on par strength wise to the D44. The D44 has the strongest gear and axels of the XJ rear ends. But the 8.25 has the strongest housing. D35 and D44 use 2 3/4" u-bols and the 8.5 uses a 3" U-bolt.

Dana 35 C does not stand for c-clip, its for on 35s that were sent in pieces to Chrysler and assembled by them. Also I think up until 1990 the XJ 35s were non c-clip.
All that aside, get the 8.25, even a 27 spline is stronger than a 35.

its better in that if you blew a shaft, the wheel and shaft wouldnt come off....thats the only difference, an 8.25,regardless of spline#, is still better than any d35
