Could just be as simple as the electronic part of the ignition switch going bad. It is above your foot on the right side of the column and can get bad contact points over the years. very easy to change, and not very expensive either. Probably start there as that is a common part to wear out compared to most anything else in that area.

Not the relay, but actually bolted to the steering column above your right foot. You can see it, and an actuating rod that comes from the upper part of the column. Has a group of wires in a row off of it. You will have to look directly at the lower part of the column to see it. Should either be off white or blue attached to the column by a metal plate if I remember correctly. You can find them at most of the local parts places if you need an idea of what to look for. Think mine cost 25 or 30 bucks a few years ago. Hope that helps

I don't have much personal experience, except to see it's low down there on top of the column, and a real booger for a 6'1" 300 Lb guy to see. I gather it's not rare that the contacts between the plug and switch can get funky. This condition would cause heat and trouble that might snowball, melt things.
Waz me, I might disconnect the battery, unplug the ign switch and hit the plug socket with contact cleaner, work it on and off, repeat. (CRC, in the red can). At the parts counter at O'F'meesz, they have $1 packets of "oxy -guard". Any grease that prevents oxygen from corroding a connection might be better than none...that stuff might actually conduct , so less is better!
