I have a 88 keep Comanche 5 spd and the ignition is **** up in the column somewhere causing it to not need a key to start. I have a 88 auto parts Cherokee well the steering column work from that in my Comanche since its a auto or dose it not matter? There both 88 4.0 thanks guys

It don't matter as long as the other one is working you'll be fine. If it was me I would try to figure out the problem first. It could be as easy as something getting stuck or as bad was a wire broken.

Let we restate that I didn't read it right. The problem is the key release. Since on auto there is two cable on the shifter one is to the column an other is to the trans, which allow the key to be released and the colunm to locked when moved into park. On a stick the cable is deleated and used the lever to release the key. Like I said before try to repair the one in the truck first cause it goin to be a hastle to make the other one work right

I think I might of just found my problem then chase the column in the jeep now dose not have the lever by the keys so it must be out of a auto so that's why it's not working. Is there a way to by pass this or do I need to get one from a manual?

I dont think jeep have a release lever for the key, my 95 doesnt

Its hard to say. Did you buy it like this? Did it start before? Can you take the keys out of the ignition and the steering wheel be locked? You could prob make it work, but you have to remember the clutch it goin to play a role, because when you depress the clutch there is a switch almost like the brake switch that when you let it go it will complete the circuit and start the jeep. It would be easier just to get a column from the jy and switch the igntion so you have the same keys.

idk about the OP but i dont have a clutch switch either. I always start mine in 1st lol

Sounds like the key switch is messed up if it allows the jeep to start without the key. could swap the other in and see if it still does it.

Yes i bought it like this. um yes i can take the keys out but i have to turn the key back really hard and get the key back and no the steering wheel dose not lock the pin that locks the steering wheel dose not come up far enough

The black one is what goes the wheel it allows the key to be released and for the steering wheel to lock

In the cold morning or nights when I start mine and more it mine gets stuck and I have to manualy take it off to get my key out.

Did you ever get to start it before this happened or had the who ever you got it from start it? Your missing one thing and without looking at it its kinda hard to say that oh your only missing this ect... the easier thing that I would do is just swap them out maybe the other one might work, might not but easiest thing go to jy and pick on up for a stick

OP has a manual so he doesnt have that cable

Right I know that but in order to get the wheel to lock and all that crap he would need to figure how to mount something like it. He has to have something disconected under the dash that's open and not completing the circuit

Hey im having g the same exact problem with the same scenario with my 88 parts Cherokee and 88 Comanche. I had read this forum while doing the swapping of parts on yhe Comanche. Im about to just swap the whole dang column. Idk please help
