Default Jeep Cherokee - Select-Trac

What would be involved in swapping out a ‘Standard’ 4 WD transfer case, to one with ‘Select-Trac’ transfer case on a 2001 jeep cherokee? Would it be a simple change of the transfer case, or involve a lot more: ie: parts, computer modifications/upgrades, wiring, etc?

You'll need the case, shifter gate, shifter bezel, and wiring harness (if you want the "Full-Time" light to work).

Thank you dmill89 for your response, it is appreciated!

I have been checking e-bay for a selec-trac transfer case to replace my command-trac on my 2001 cherokee, and it would appear the #242 is the correct one for my vehicle, although it also seems it is used on the Grand Cherokee as well. Can you confirm that the #242 is what i should be looking for? Also, you mentioned the 'shifter gate', i'm assuming that is the 'handle'?

The NP/NV242 is the correct full-time/part-time case for an XJ (look for one from a '97+ if you just want it to bolt in, '91+ will work but requires modifications). The shifter-plate is the metal plate under the shift-lever with "notches" in it for the different positions, the 242 has an extra position (full-time 4WD) so you need the gate to match, you can use the same handle, but the gate must be changed (and bezel if you want it to show the correct positions/pattern).

You do have an automatic right? The NP242 and the AX-15 5 speed do not get along and it will cause a lot of problems.

Yes, my Cherokee is an automatic. Thank you for asking, and pointing out the potential issues with a manual transmission, i wouldn't have ever given it a second thought.
Thank you for your response.

i'm going to temporarily hijack ACC's thread... i have a 96 and I'd like to do the same thing. I'd need to get a 242 from 91 through 96, correct? Would any Jeep 242 work? As ACC said, I've seen many on eBay stating "pulled from Grand Cherokee".

Thanks and good luck to you on the swap. Let me know how it goes!

I dont think the grand cherokee models are a direct swap. Something about the splines being different or the drive shaft mount being different. Google it to be sure.
