That is correct. I can verify after installing my trans cooler in my '98 last night. Pre-97 years, they reversed the connections. God knows why...silly engineers.

My rear trans line goes to the bottom of the radiator and the front line to the top.
Also found these:
"Here is how it works, your trans is operating in the 250deg range, the fluid goes into the radiator and is cooled down to engine temp(195-210),it then exits the radiator and enters the aux cooler and is cooled again before returning to the trans.
That is the way it goes, any different is wrong. For every 20 deg you lower the temp of an automatic, you double it's life."

Anyway, 250 F would quickly fry the fluid!
My tranny runs at 160 F around town, 180 on the beach. On highway it runs 140 F. I do not have the stock heat exchanger connected. If I did the tranny temps would likely be more steady.
I thought that statement was in reference to a cherokee. Maybe not. It was a Jeep site anyways.
From all of the sites I've been on today I've come to one conclusion. The factory wasn't consistant with where the lines went into the radiator. Saw a diagram of a '96 that was hooked up opposite my '96. But then I also found that my '96 takes a '97 windshield washer level sensor which doesn't surprise me. Going to do djb's test to make certain.

Forward port on AW4 is always the out line = hot.
Also, it flows at a good rate. If you do the flow test, be prepared. I have found it only takes the engine running for two seconds to have over one pint.
FYI, the pump runs in all gear selections, including Park.

THANKS for the warning. Also good to know about Park. My wife is a GREAT helper at doing these kinds of things so she'll be at the key. I plan on testing the rear line from the trans which goes to the bottom of the radiator. If it's the return line fluid will flow out of the radiator side and then it'll be just a matter of plumbing in the cooler.
Just wondering since you've got a '96 is your return line at the bottom of your radiator?

Ref. to post #110........I don't think there is a question about the front/rear ports on the side of the tranny.....the question is, which line is the return line at the rad (top or bottom). Apparently those lines at the rad changed depending on year. The test I post (#99) will always verify which is the return line for the purposes of installing a auxiliary tranny cooler inline with and after the OE rad cooler.
From what I've read today it seems the line locations to the radiator may have changed sometime in '96.
As sycoglitch calls it the "B" yr.
