Question Into 4 high goes to 2 wheel drive

So when i shift into 4 wheel drive it goes to 2 wheel drive. When i shift into 2 wheel drive it goes to 4 wheel drive. So is this why my 4 wheel drive doesnt work? Cuz before i put it into 4 wheel drive and got grinding gears sound and once it worked for like 5 minutes and then stopped working

Something may have been assembled backwards by a previous owner.

But that doesn't quite make sense to me.

you have a vacuum disconnect front axle. Likely a vacuum leak is causing your issues. Very common on older XJs with this axle.

search d30 vacuum disconnect bypass for the fix.

Why would it have 4wd when 2wd is selected, then?

Wouldn't that just keep the front axle locked in when in 2wd and unlocked when in 4wd?

I mean, you gotta activate the Tcase when switching to 4wd, otherwise the front DS gets no power, right?

From what I got in the OP's post he's got 4 when he selects 2 and the other way around when selected to 2wd.

I replaced the diaphram and shifter fork a month ago and it worked amazing for a month. Then it just started doing the zzzzzz sound and stopped working. so I took off the fork. I put it in 4 high and watch the fork move to 2 wheel drive. Then i shifted to two wheel drive then watched the fork shift to 4 wheel drive. I reversed the hoses and it still did the same thing!

The box on the axle itself?

Thats about the only thing I could imagine.

I still don't know, unless I'm misunderstanding the OP.
