Hey all, 2000 xj 4.0 with 225k on her. Just the other day when on the highway it shifted down from 5th to 4th, and stayed like that. it would shift down fine, but no matter how fast I went it would not go up to 5th. after rest stop, I had my OD again for a while until it happened again. it seems to just randomly shift down after driving the highway speeds for a while. any ideas what this might be? any help would be awesome.

Alright. I'd start with the easy things first and check your trans fluid level and condition. You could also try adjusting your kick down cable. I'm pretty sure there is a write up on here for it.

Another thing to check is your brake light switch.. if it's out of adjustment it can prevent OD and torque converter lock-up as well. When you're up to highway speed, try lifting the brake pedal up. If it shifts, adjust the switch.

As an update, my fluid level was within the proper range, but I added a half quart and the problem so far has been solved. Not sure why it was happening, but thanks for the advice
