interesting symptoms
Hey guys, so over the last few days I decided it was time to put a new tcase in my 89 Cherokee, its a 242 which was a direct swap. All seemed to go ok but when i went for a test drive the jeep kept jerking like it was down and upshifting when it wanted to. I didn't want to drive it to far to get a better description. What I know I need to do is the case shifter linkage, my question is if that's not positioned right would that cause my symtoms. I know my trannys good. I was also thinking maybe that speed cable is nasty or something. Chime in let me know what ya think

Linkage could explain it. Did you replace the shifter assembly in the cab? The 231 and 242 have different shift gates for the handle to move through.
RWD
PT 4WD
FT 4WD
N
PT LOW
You should not be able to shift into N position without putting the trans in Neutral first so usually I try to set the linkage in RWD then use Full-Time and Neutral positions to verify the setup

My Cherokee is a limited and came with the 242. Never had a 231... I got 242 to put in. So the shifter is good. Thanks and so I should set it at 2wheel

I've made it little farther but im not there yet. My shifter is now good and in the correct spot but now constantly says I'm in part time with the shifter in 2w. I can pull the shifter up to 4hi and it will come up on the dash but does want to engage. I'm starting to think there's binding in the tcase? I can also hear a whine that I haven't heard before but can't tell where it is and only while acceleration.

And also again I still have the funky shifty thing but I think my tcase is jumping from part time to 2w, or 4 hi. This might be a dumb question but must I have my front drive shaft in to disengage part time. I'm thinking it might be mechanic time but I don't want to get ripped off...

If you're not in a hurry and have some money, you should buy an overhaul kit for the rebuild, that will get you new bearings and seals and such
is there a whole kit I can get that comes with forks bearings and a chain? That way one case will be good and the other can be the Frankenstein!

I don't know of a good kit with both. Timken TCRK242 has the bearings and seals, kind of pricey but its Timken. Cloyes makes chains for these things, should be 10028 but you should measure to confirm. rockauto and amazon have both.

Thanks ehall. I took apart the tcase that would only drive in two wheel apart. The gears are little groved on the edges, not too bad. Forks look brand new, super loose chain and the screen is ripped. I'm starting to wonder why I got another tcase. I'll post some pics as soon as I get to a computer so you guys can tell me what you think.... I'm kinda sad it looks like only a chain
