Default Interesting Penzoil thread from Bob the Oil Guy Forum

Notice a lot of people dont like Penzoil on here. I never run it but was a little concerned as the PO of my newly aquired XJ had her oil changed at Jiffy Lube its entire life and of course used Penzoil. Anyway, here is an interesting thread from some fellow Jeep owners that recommend the Penz. Assume the PP = Penzoil Platimum and the YBP = Yellow Bottle Penzoil.

jeeze, what forum is that? jiffy lube forum? 5k, once a yr, diesel oil in 4.0?? i have a headache from so much bad info.

penzoil is perafin based, it gets waxy with age, and prone to sludge. its fine if changed frequently.

switching to synthetic in a 300k engine, no kidding it leaked. synthetic can make a higher mileage engine leak, but its because the molecules are smaller and uniform, where "dino" oil has irregular and larger molecules.

I have not read that link yet, but Pennzoil Platinum is pretty good actually. It's their Dyno oil that sucks. As for high mileage engines, it is hit and miss as to weather syn will work.
What I always do with higher mileage engines, is run either a mix of dyno and a syn. blend or run the syn. blend and keep an eye on it and see if it leaks (or leaks more).

My old 89 2dr that had 250k on it ran like new, and loved the full syn. Then one of the 90's that I had with 350k didnt even like the blend, I put regular oil back in and it ran okay.

No one will ever convince me that running Penzoil or Quaker state or any oil like it is ok. It's crap oil and always will be. I have seen a number of engines after running Penzoil for years and it's not pretty at all. Just like no one will ever convince me that running a K&N filter is ok for an engine.

What's wrong with a K&N Filter?

I use Castrol GTX, works just fine for me.

It breaths more for a reason..It allows more particles ie dirt to pass through. You might as well save your money goto walmart get some cotton gauze and then some wires and make your own. That's what those lovely K&N filters are made of. They are ok for pure street use but offroad where you actually come in contract with loads of dirt not so good.

i have removed heads and valve covers on engines that ran penzoil and it is nasty, it is actually wax. but, my uncle won't give up penzoil, and he has two higher mileage trucks, and he is a fanatic, he is borderline excessive compulsive. his maintenance is perfect, and they are fine.

i will never use, or recomend the stuff.

Im running Maxlife 10w30 and a quart of lucas in mine (First change since I got it, its on sale this month) I will see how it does and decide from there, Im a pretty good fan of Castrol though, and Amsoil of course, I have seen too many Penzoil horror stories, But there are too many people like my boss who thinks Penzoil is the only way (I see it at my 2nd job at Autozone, the people that will only use Penzoil no matter what!)

As long as you are aware that Castrol Syntec is not a true full syn. Their Syn. blend is not bad tho.

And seriously, Pennz. Plat is not bad at all. I absolutely HATE pennz. dyno oil.. but their full syn is really good. I used to work at an oil analysis lab, I ran test on a few different varieties. BTW.. if any of you are interested in doing tests or to see how your oil is and what is/can be wrong with your vehicle (all fluids for that matter) the site of the place I used to work is www.oillab.com

I run diesel oil in mine. it has way more ZDDP than other oils, and the 15w-40 makes my leaky motor happy.

Imho KK&N aren't so much "wrong" but instead are not right for some applications. They flow more air than comparable size paper filters because they have more pores and of larger size.
On race tracks and in low dust environments they are fine when every molecule of air counts. Otherwise paper filters catch more and smaller particulates. When we need more air flow than stock we use the biggest filter we can fit under the hood.
