Default OMG not another thread about oil...

No I am not going to ask people to argue the benefits of various brands or weights.

I am definately not going to get into the whole synthetic / blended / standard oil debate.

I am just popping in to ask peoples opinions on the benefits and / or drawbacks of using oil marketed as "High Milage or Extended Life".

Whats the difference?

Other than it costing like a buck a quart more that is.

im pretty uninformed on the subject but here goes anyways.... heavier oils will generally do better in older or high mileage engines cause the thiker oil is less likey to bleed or seep from worn areas where as light oils, though resisting heat better, will tend to leak from worn seals and gaskets... TELL ME IF IM WRONG!!! nothing wrong w/ constructive critisism

More detergents and additives in high mileage oils..

I love oil threads, my response maybe very simplistic but thats really about it..

OEJ, why even respond with a response like that??

Nonetheless, hope you get a more in depth answer if you need one.

Sorry Dechion, I shouldn't have said it that way. I have no excuse it was mean; seriously.

Yeah the only difference between regular oil and "high mileage" oil is that the "high mileage" oil has detergents to clean the older engines.... Really that's about it.

No prob OEJ, I know this topic is beat to death.

As it is I will be going with high milage conventional, at least for the first oil change. I wish I had a better handle on what was in it before, but I literally had a flat bed drag the carcass out from behind a ranchers barn.

I am just stoked that it's running again. :-)

Here is my take on responses telling someone to search and adding nothing to the topic.

About a year ago, on another vehicle forum I was looking for an answer to an issue with an eight year old vehicle.

I did a search of that forum and it seemed the issue had been around for a while and there was a thread with some good information. However it did not answer my issue but it was the closest to my problem so I posted a response to the thread, asking for clarification of one specific point.

I felt I had done the right thing in searching, and posting to what I felt was an appropriate thread.

Out of the first 10 response two of them were .....

" Way yo go, digging up an ancient thread from the graveyard. "

" Wow, great job on reviving a flatliner thread. "

Four more were .... " +1 ", or " I agree " to the above two responses.

I came to the conclusion that, search or not, somebody gonna jump on you about it!

If it's been sitting that long I'd run some kind of flush through it before changing the oil.

I prefer synthetic oil and stock up whenever it's on sale regardless of brand.

Marketing hype and the cost of extra ink to print the words "High Mileage" and "Extended Life" on the bottle. Don't stop there....much better to run premium gas in the XJ and pay only an extra $0.20-$0.30/gal. Oil companies do pay good dividends.
