Default Regular or Synthetic oil?

2000 xj sport,

45,000 miles. Perfect shape. Just inherited it and it's like super new.

anyway, changing the oil, and wondering it I
Should make the switch to synthetic? A buddy tells me it was not built to run on synthetic, so no. Another buddy tells me it's 17 years old, so the switch would be a really good idea.

thoughs?

With todays oil it really don't matter. Do what makes you feel good. Personally my 01 cherokee has 196,000 on it and I run full synthetic. Who knows what it had in it before I got it about 6 months ago but I can only assume it has had thousands of miles running on one or the other depending on the owner. All I know is it don't leak oil and I personally like using synthetics.

The thing that really changed me to using synthetic is when I used symthetic grease on my tool box slides and seen how much better it was over conventional.

Picked up my 96 with 49k on the clock. Similar situation.

Oil threads tend to bring out all sorts of opinions, options, information, etc. By the time they are done you'll be right back where you started, trying to decide what you want to do. Perhaps with a little more information.

The most simple answer I can give you, is that you could run either and it would be fine. Especially if you intend to change the oil frequently. Quality filters, and an appropriate change interval would be more significant.

There is a ton of information on the interwebs regarding conventional vs. synthetic and their various properties. You could probably read/watch items on this topic for a week and not have exhausted what is available.

Got to go get my popcorn now.

Oh lord, another oil thread. You're gonna get different responses on here based on many people's personal experience or lack thereof.

I would do general research on the differences between synthetic and conventional oil. There's a lot out there on it and also a lot of myths and fallacies surrounding this issue.

Whatever you do, just change the oil with regularity. That's paramount, even on your low mileage XJ (congrats). The general range from what people say here is about 3-6 months or 3-6K miles, whichever comes first.

Good luck and get your popcorn ready, oil threads seem to spark some passion on this forum.

In doubt about using synthetic or conventional oil...?
There are synthetic blends out there like Rotella T5 which combines both.

yeah, the rotella diesel oil info posted awhile back was very detailed about the ingredients that are good for theses old engines.
my last change was t4, the reg stuff . one of the regular guys here said he used it, good enuf for me.
btw that was the change that gave me a one day slight jump in temp!
never figured that and im not going back!

Normally I would just keep yelling "Rotella T6" but with only 45k miles, I would run any good 5w30 synthetic (AMSOIL if money is no object, Castrol, Pennzoil, or M1 if you want something locally).

Wix 51515 oil filter (same as Napa 1515), slightly larger oil filter than stock, or the Mopar 090 is a good filter too.
6k oil change intervals and it should last a long time.

At 45k miles, definitely change all other fluids as well. Diffs, t-case, trans, power steering, brake fluid, coolant, and don't forget to change out your blinker fluid too
