My 96 XJ has the plain (idiot light) instrument cluster. I have found several nice replacements at the junkyard with gauges and tach. I imagine I would have to use different water temp and oil pressure sending units??? Would my wiring harness already have the tach signal in it? Fuel gauge work right? Voltmeter? Would anything be different for the speedo between 5 speed and auto transmissions? Basically is this a plug and play swap? Or what all do I need to do to replace the instrument cluster and everything work right?

Unless I am mistaken it is a direct swap and everything will work the same except as you mentioned you will need to change out the 2 sending units. Just grab them at the junk yard from whatever XJ has the gauge cluster. This is one of the best swaps anyone with an XJ can make.

Yes, a direct swap, except the original temperature and oil pressure units - which are just switches in base models - must be replaced with the correct type to drive the gauges.
Obviously make sure you stay within the same style. '97+ won't work, and really old models use a cable-driven speedometer/odometer.
