I know this is old but I came across this while searching google. What exactly does the sensor in the t stat housing do? I got a cheap sunpro gauge and pulled the factory sensor and plugged the new one in. engine was cold and first start the engine was misfiring bad. So I plugged the factory sensor back into the harness but left it just dangling there. Started up and ran normal again. driving home I noticed an increase in low end torque. The jumped when I shifted and just felt peppier. Only "side effect" I have found is a slightly high idle, but once I get to under 5mph the idle dropped to normal. Anyone have am explanation for this?

If you got more torque just from unplugging the thermostat temp sensor it'll be the cheapest easiest torque gain in the history of the automobile. All hail Dirty Bomb

But seriously, I put the sensor to my aftermarket temp gauge in the housing the REAR of the head, it's work great there for about 5 years.
