Unhappy installed AA SYE unable to reconnect tcase linkage

Hello all! I picked up the Advance Adapters SYE kit and a new driveline from Tom Woods.

I had it all back together and then realized I couldnt get it to shift out of NUETRAL. Although the t-case lever was at 4 Lo.

So, I broke the cover open again ... and manually shifted it into 4LO.
Or so I think ...

Looking at the insides of the t-case, I could see where the linkage connects and shifts into each gear. (2h, 4h, 4l)

At first I thought it needed to be shifted all the way down, to the bottom of the "channel" to be 4LO. The "range adjustment plate" fits nicely over the pin on the outside of the tcase ... but once I tightened it up, it wouldnt move again.

Seems I had reversed it ? So, using a adj wrench I shifted the tcase to the opposite end of the channel ... the top inside. Once again, I was hoping this would be 4LO.

I loosened up the adjuster for the linkage .... but it just won't line up. Its just a hair off. If I shift it manually with the wrench one "click" the plate fits. But visually it appears I would now be in 4H .... (assuming 4Lo at one end, 2h at other)

Can anyone clarify ... if you're looking at the back of the transfer case w/o cover removed ... is 4LO the upper or lower reach of the linkage channel ?

Any other ideas as to why its giving me such a hard time ?? If its of any value, I can take a couple photos to explain.

Been working on this for ~6.5 hrs now ... any help will be appreciated.

This is an 92 cherokee ... np231 t-case ... RE 3.5" lift, no TC drop

I'm trying to figure out how to properly re-attach the shifting linkage.

Think I got it now ... the linkage went horizontal, then up ... I had it horontal, then the bracket went down.

But its still off ... it starts off in 2H at the 4 LOW position.
then it only goes so far as 4H (forward halfway)... which seems to be 4H.

Make sense to anyone ?

Read in ure manual about shift linkage adjustment. it's a bit of pain to figure out, but once you do it's all worth it.

right, RFM

I realize now that regardless -- I shouldnt have to break open the t-case to fix it, since it can be shifted and adjusted manually via the shift linkage.

you got it. just depends on the condition of your linkage, mine is all rusted together so i need to get it to break free (but for an 87 it's there and has never been touched). I'm sure though you will get it working it's not that hard when you figure which piece goes in what direction.

Question

I've got it adjust so now 4L - N - 4H all work ... but it refuses to shift into 2H.

Its good enough for now, but its making me wonder if I need to pull the tcase apart again ... to figure out why it refuses to shift into 2H.

side note, the speedometer isnt working now ... and It looks like the speedo gears can be install in (4) different position / angles ...

Is there a method for checking that as well ? besides trying all 4 positions and seeing if it works ?

continue to adjust the linkage, and you will get 2h. as for the speedo gear the jurys still out on the verdict. i have the same problem on mine. if you figure it out let me know, what you found out. my best guess as to what happened is possibly the cable my be pushed to far into the casing (excess cable pushed to the speedometer) i believe the gear is suppose to click onto the cable. i have tried installing the gear in the various positions and still get nothing. now i suffer from there's snow which = cold which + no garage =i keep my bad self where it's warm. as well i'm going to be ordering a bunch of parts for my mistress and am waiting to tear it all open till that i get them.

Just curious..did you have to trim material off your shift rail to install the SYE?

Default you guessed it

indeed - that was the entire problem.

The directions mentioned trimming the pin to fit the new casing, but it said it was only for CJs.

I took the cover back off and shifted it into 4L and 2H to see the movement - and ended up cutting off nearly 1" of the pin.

Worked great ever since.
