I was wondering about doing that cargo floor mod so as to not have to deal with the tank as well. Seems like a no brainer: a stable hand, small grinder w/ cutting wheel attached, pretty straight forward job.

Default Just to recap on the inline check valve

Hi, Ive also got a 1998 XJ 4l, with the starting issue if left overnight. I have replaced the entire pump module with the Bosch aftermarket product, but I still have the same issue. Any suggestions what the next step should be?

Thanks !

You may have one or two leaking fuel injectors.

Do you have to floor it to get it running?

thanks for the speedy reply!

Nope, foot not even on the gas, only have to crank it for about 2-3 seconds and then it starts. Without any spluttering, just runs smoothly.

What about this... "I've also got a 1998 XJ 4l, with the starting issue if left overnight: ?

If you think you have an issue with fuel rail bleed-down over night, rent (refundable deposit) a fuel pressure test set up from an auto part store and fuel pressure leak down test at your fuel rail.

With the gauge hooked up, start the engine. The fuel pressure should go to 49.2 psi +/- 5 psi within 1-2 seconds.

Shut the engine off. Pressure should not fall below 30 psi for five minutes.

If it does rapidly fall below 30 psi, and you think your new fuel pump check valve is okay, the only other thing that would cause a rapid drop off would be leaky injectors.

You can check this with the proper equipment to isolate the fuel pump, but if you don't have it, you can unplug each fuel injector and pull the fuel rail, with injectors still installed, back far enough to get bits of paper towels under each injector nozzle then activate the pump several key turns and let it set. Look for evidence of fuel leaking on the paper towels.

Apologies, what I mean is that the problem is only evident when it has been standing for a longer period of time (like overnight). Once I get it started in the morning it starts fine for the rest of the day.

So I guess I'll have to have the injectors checked? Here in South Africa we can't rent equipment. But at least I can point the workshop in the right direction.

Thanks again for the help.
