Default Info request about the transmition

So here it goes, I own a 1988 XJ with the 4.0 and an auto trany. My shifter is normal with P--R--N--(D)--3--1/2 . Can any one tell me what speeds coincide with what gear? Because at 35/45 mph I have a hard shift and this happens both going up and coming down.

The only automatic the 4.0L was mated to in an XJ is the Aisin-Warner AW4. It's a 4-speed overdrive transmission with electronic controls and locking torque converter.

First things first though - is this new Jeep to you? Fluid change is the first step! These things take Dexron III/Mercon spec fluid, commonly sold as Dex/Merc.

Also give this a spin, takes but a minute: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/free-quick-fix-41821/
