something that i havent seen anyone comment about is elevation, the amount of oxygen in the air plays a big factor to gas mileage, also plays a big factor in hp as well. living at 4200ft i can pull 24mpg but if i went to sea level i may only be able to get 17, but i would also have more hp at sea level seeing as the air is denser. this is just theoretically speaking, i havent put my jeeps to a gas mileage test yet so im not sure on the numbers here.

mine has moods.. some days, if the weather is fair and I drive well, she has suprised me with as much as 25 mpg highway and 19-20 city. The on that special time of the month she gets s*** mileage, around 19 highway and 15 city.

Someone needs to make some Jeep Midol or something.. I would be the first to buy it

Quote: You could upgrade your injectors to some 95-96 dodge neon injectors. i got better start up, better throttle response and about 2 mpg better. i get around 18 mpg city, 97 xj sport, 160k miles, automatic, 31in BFG A/T's 3 inch lift. winch, winch bumper, heavy duty back bumper.....lots of added weight. so far the injectors have been the BEST engine upgrade i've done. cost me about 80 bucks for a set of 8 used injectors. our jeep injectors are one hole spray pattern, neon are 4....
would neon injectors work for the renix 89' ? if so would the results be as good?

I have a 89 with the 4.0 and auto. It has a glass pack to nothing and a front skid plate and I can pull off some crazy *** highways miles. I haven't tracked it but I'm going on a trip in a week and I'll do it then. But it seems like I've gotten 30mpg or better and the tranny button is always on power.

Why the hostility here.
Why can't i have an XJ and try to also get the best gas milage out of it I can.
If only the super rich can afford to drive a Cherokee there won't be too many of them left for you to play with.
Is that what you want? Because your sport will die if you can't keep the numbers of HAPPY XJ owners high.

These types of threads bring out a lot of ugliness. Some people see "Increase MPG" and their eyes roll and they just move to the next post. Others, like myself, read the post to see if there is anything they might have overlooked. Still others, the "Buy a Prius" crowd, feel they are helping the OP out by pointing out the obvious! Apparently the forum mods need to post "acceptable thread questions". Sorry for the rant, but I used to get the same responses when I was trying to learn. I always hated hearing "Jeep would have put that in from the factory if it really worked!" Remember your mom saying "If you can't say anything nice..." LOL

Anyway, one thing I haven't heard mentioned is O2 Sensors. These buggers directly control the computer's decision on fuel/air mixture. = )

I've read threads where there has been some talk of a way to modify the computer. Are we truly stuck with the factory program?

I wish!
Stock 4.0... and when I say over 20mph I'm talkin 20.1mpg-20.2mpg and that is driving 65mph (75mph puts me in the 18's), which happens to be the speed limit on the section of road I was driving.
Having said all that, it's got fresh O2 sensors, fresh cat, quality coil/cap/rotor/wires/plugs. The only "upgrades" would be a panel K'n'N and a flowmaster muffler... which I doubt bring much (if any) to the table.
I don't run a roof rack, or a spare hanging off the back, my tires are 10.50's and they are not stuck out past the fenders/body.

FWIW, I've been doing only city driving for the last month and a half... I am averaging 18.1mpg in town.

This is on crappy 87oct ethonol gas as served in PHX.
