So since winter has calmed down a little i decided to give my poor neglected secondary jeep a little time to run and drive since it hasnt in about a month. Well the battery is dead and i go to jump it and it starts but i hear a horrible noise coming from the bell housing/ and or front of the trans so i try to take it out of park, that solves it. In every other gear this elusive high pitched noise goes away. Then i go to put it back into park and my jeep dies. So i go to jump it again and as soon as i connect the positive jumper cable it starts trying to turn the motor over. This is without the key. So i try to put the jumper cables on again and it does the same thing. The motor turns but wont start. I have tried google and havent found and leads to help me diagnose so i am hoping someone on here can.
!. why would my jeep be trying to start when i connect jumper cables to it?
2. anyone know what could have caused the high pitched noise?

As Busted said, sounds like the starter solenoid is stuck, causing the engine to crank when the battery has juice. Whit the key off it won't start. As for the noise, I would speculate that it is caused by the starter still turning while the engine is running. Not good for the flex plate.....RR
I'm not trying too call you stupid but I just got my first jeep and when you start it the key likes to stick in start position and it took me a while to realize what I was doing wrong. It just wants springing back to the run position

sounds like you might need a new ignition lock cylinder
I believe either your solenoid is stuck, or your ignition is stuck. The noise you hear when it is put in gear, is the starter spinning. When your vehicle is in gear. The neutral safety switch will not allow the starter to energize. But it will allow it to in Park and Neutral. Get this fixed asap if you like your flexplate or starter (if its not too late)

Did you read what I said? Haha. Without even having the key in it cranks. Thanks but I'm not stupid
