I drive about 300 miles in 10-12 days. sorry to hear for the rough times in the XJ people will keep telling you the same as far as the tune up but it could be something internal-head or valve timing

Install a locking gas cap and see if your mileage increases. It worked for my step daughter's Explorer.

There are a lot of things that could be wrong but start with your distributor and make sure you're getting good spark.
Timing belt is not applicable on a 4.0.

you aren't getting 5mpg lol.

its probabaly getting stolen, or you arent filling it enough, or you are doing the math wrong. The worse tune up and the heaviest foot would make it hard pressed to get 5 miles per gallon, hell a jeep floored for 5 miles would probabaly still get 5mpg lol.

get a locking gas cap, and see if the thief decides punching a hole in the tank makes more sense.

on the lighter side, my grandfather RIP, wayyyy back in the day, had a volvo or something smaller I forget which, but he use to brag to all his co workers about how many MPG he was getting. Well after a while the co workers got sick of it, so they would go out in the parkinglot on lunch and add gas to the car on a regular basis, until finally he was getting like 70 mpg lollllll needless to say he never bragged about it once he realized what was happening lol.

I did not think about it that way my 5.9 grand being hammered uphill to flagstaff with ac on only drops to 6 to 8. That does make more sense that someone my be helping themselves to you go go juice. Especially if you have no other drivability issues. Time for a camera to film at night or a big dog to guard it.

Someone stole my gas. I had a lil over a quarter tank, parked it beside my house, and the next day it was dry... I was surprised someone had the guts to get right next to my house just to get a few gallons of gas. Getting a locking cap soon as possible!! >:0
