I'm fishing for knowledge here on ignition systems. I have another thread that I think I didn't ask the right questions in.

What I have: a 96 with distributor. And a 98, that for some reason has coil. And from everything I'm learning (and yes, trying to learn here) should not have coils.
The 98 has a hole in the side of the block, so no good.
The 96 has a good running engine, with a rotted body.

I want to swap the 96 engine into the 98 and make it run on distributor, not coil.
What do need to do to make that happen? Can I swap in the ECM from the 96 or should get one from a 98 that already ran distributor?
Or should just get another coil fired engine?

Bottom line, can I make the 96 engine run in the 98 without major modification?
Please tell me how you would handle this, not just tell me that a 98 shouldn't have coils.

Look at the side of your 98 PCM. There's a decal with a Chrysler pat number on it. Post that part number here.


The original PCM part number for a '98, 4.0, AW4 trans, Federal emissions, is 56041 534AB.

What engine and what transmission are you dealing with? Federal emissions?

 

Sorry for the late response. Mine says 635AG. 4.0, aw4 TRANS, yes emissions.

 

That 635AG PCM is for a 2000 XJ, 4.0, AW4, California Emissions.


I have no idea what this setup you have is all about.

Yep, she's a 98 xj. Title says so.

 

Now, with that being said. What about swapping my computer and harness from the 96 into the 98. Then just dropping in my 96 engine and not having to worry about converting?

 

Could you post some pics of that '98 coil set up?


You'll need a '98 PCM. Part number 56041534AB to drive the distributor and communicate with the Camshaft Position Sensor in the distributor.


You'll need a harness to accommodate the distributor system. '96 distributor harness may work.


Not sure about the '96 fuel injectors. It looks like the '98 PCM fuel injector drivers will work with the '96 injectors, but again, not sure if the '96 injectors have an 11-12 Ohm impedance.

 

Or..... Swap the block from the 96 to the 98's head, remove the distributor, put a cam sensor in and drop it into the 98 body and be done? Will this work?

What does the exhaust mani look like?

I'm almost willing to bet someone swapped a 2000 motor/ecm into your 98, or the title is wrong...

 

reason they're all confused is 98 was distributor ignition, so coil-rail ignition means the whole ignition setup was swapped from a 2000/2001, so first have to unravel that before answering your question

Where are all the vin tags besides the dash and doors? Kid I bought it from told me the the driver door had been replaced and was a different vin number. I just looked it over and all the doors and rear hatch have matching vin #'s. Different from what's on the dashboard. Either way, I have it and need it to run. Pretty sure the engine is 2k at least.

 

Don't trust the VIN's on the doors...you need to run the VIN on the dash, as that's most likely the one that the XJ was originally titled with. Doors can be replaced, the dash VIN would be much harder. I would run both VIN #'s, and figure out what's going on. Sounds fishy to me, your engine, ignition, exhaust, and PCM are definitely from a 00-01. Someone could easily swap out the doors, use the VIN # from that, and register it as a 98. Quite possible you have a stolen vehicle, or a body that was totaled by an insurance company, but still good enough to fix, and do the shell game with a title. Easier to sell a car with swapped doors and a fake title than selling a stolen or totaled one...regardless, I'd be looking CAREFULLY at all the VIN's on that shell...
