Put a switch on the that disconnects the battery, leave the key in and hide the switch in your center console or under the dash somewhere you know where it is but is not obvious and run it. Your jeep will shut off if you break the circuit loop to the battery.

my 90 jeep has a similar problem kinda i have to push the gear shift all the way forcing it forward if it does not click when you put it in park for automatics then it will not let you pull the key back so make shure you are all the way in park

I think best way to solve this problem is to replace the ignition switch, instead of repairing it, may be there is something wrong in locking mechanism to the electric Switch.

Well i got into the column and found the ignition switch and adjusted it to where it would work. i still couldnt get the key out and after about an hour of tinkering with all the linkages, i gave up and the f***-it took over so i grabbed ahold of the ears by the key with pliers and turned it back with alot of force. the key came out, goes back in, and turns! not an approved method, but hey, it works and im back on the road now!
