Default Idle smoke fixed, Now Oil PSI

Thanks for all who helped with my problem. The valve seals fixed the idle smoke. Now i started driving the jeep and im having a weird oil psi problem. There was quiet a bit of gunk built up on the head, so I done my best to clean it up before i put my valve cover back on. I put a little bit of sea foam in my oil and let it idle for about 10 mins and then drained. I replaced the filter and put 10w-40 back in it. Start up oil pressure is around 45-50 lbs. After I drive for 20-25 mins it will work its way down to around 30 psi while cruising and when i stop and idle it will venture down just below the 20 mark. This kinda worries me a little. I noticed while driving steady it kinda moved back and forth between 30-40 psi. Ive never owed another vehicle that fluctuated like that. I know it should somewhat move with rpms but it goes back and forth when just holding steady rpm. One min it will say 40, and then a min later doing same speed and rpm it will go back down toward 30, and just keep doing that. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated....

The oil pressure sending switch is right next to the oil filter. Did you by chance bash it? They tend to be unreliable. Get a mechanical gauge to verify the pressure. 20 psi at hot idle is not bad. Anything over 13 psi at hot idle is acceptable. General rule is 10psi per 1k rpm.

It is possible that you might have stirred up enough gunk to be clogging the oil pump pick up screen. Keep an eye on it, as long as you have some pressure your ok....if it drops low and stays there pull the pan.

I didnt hit the sending unit, althought i took at look to make sure the connection was ok. It did run through my mind about the gunk getting stirred up. Is there any way of being able to clean it or put something in the flush it good withought pulling the pan? The gunk problem kinda makes sense to me because of the oil pressure moving back and forth a little bit at stready RPM.

I think you're worrying too much about the oil pressure you have. Keep an eye on the oil and see how quickly it darkens up. You may have to do a few oil changes every 1,000 miles to get the gunk out. Got any photos of under the valve cover you could share?

I didnt even think to snap a pic. I think I am to worried about it. Its just a high milage engine but it runs strong and quiet for the most part... Is it normal for the pressure to move up and down at a steady rpm on these jeeps ?

I recall coming across a thread on jeepforum where someone cleaned out the hole for the oil pressure switch with a pipe cleaner or something similar and it improved the oil pressure readings. Worth a shot.

the guy had a wj and what he did was removed the oil pressure sending unit and stuck a small piece of hose in the hole and ran it for sbout 8 seconds and a bunch of gunk came out. after that it read excellent oil pressure.

Yep, that's what it was. Thanks for the clarification.
