Just look around at aftermarket and also home brew bumpers. I sat down and had an image of how i wanted mine and built it, instead of copying off anyone else. Instead of having a big bulky winch bumper that stuck out, i put a reciever adapter in both front and rear bumper so i can use the winch in the front or the back. They are simple, functional and dont stick out to hang on everything.

A lot depends on what you do with your XJ. I would guess you wheel it, but what type of terrain?

I've got my winch bumper narrowed down to a few. For me, approach angle is important, but I also am concerned with protecting the nose. I was on a ride a few weeks ago where I pointed the headlights straight down into a ditch. My wheeling partner had a stinger and I saw how well it worked.

My plan is to have the winch plate up high and a stinger, but keep it as close to the grille as possible.

But, that's just what I want for mine. Spend some time thinking about what you want and look at a lot of builds on a lot of sites before you decide; there's a lot of great ideas out there. There's always someone coming up with a new & improved version, so do a lot of research.

Moved to tech. This section is for actual fabrication projects, not questions or requests for info. Thats a Cherokee Tech section question.

Take a look at the projects currently in the fab section for ideas.

How well do the trailer hitch winch mounts work? does pulling at an angle matter?
