Remove the roof rack bars and air the tires up all the way. Your radiator fan is already designed for best efficiency.
Reduce your speed until other drivers start honking at you and giving you hand signals. Then increase it a little bit.
That's about it unless you install a Prius drive train.

are you talking about removing the big mechanical fan thats hooked up to a pully. i have mine removed and run 2 eletric fans but i only need 1 running to have it stay cool. my mpg have gone up some. i also DD on the highway also and it sucks either way

I would go with the "Flex a lite" fans off Autoanything.com They have a good price that is Garuanteed for a year too. Also I hear a lot of people switch to Neon injectors from the junk yard. Just a thought. They are easy to replace.

Hard to get any great milage out of a shoe box, no matter what you do to it.18-20 on a high mile jeep is great, that's what we basically get on our trips on the highway during the winter,a bit better during summer but 18-20 is good in my book.

Wow air in the tires, who would have thought of that. Yes I want that stupid belt drive fan out. Ill check on Flex a lite, and neon injectors...thats an interesting idea. New neons or the older ones?

you dont even have to spend much on fans to keep it cool. im using 2 stock XJ eletric fans that work great. cost me about 10 bucks for both of them since the one i already had was broken

On my 91 the fan clutch was worn out and instead of replacing it. I just pulled it off and put on bolts. It was still pretty darn cold at the time and as long as I was moving it stayed cool. If I hit a drove thru I turned on auxiliary fan. I was going to put in another e fan when it started to warm up outside.
I don't know about MPG but it sounded waaaay better and the engine felt like it had a lil less drag.
I did the injector swap too... they were ford 4 hole injectors. I saw about 1.25 MPG increase (not very scientific study) that could also be chalked up to clean injectors.
I think if your hitting 18 MPG ur good. I got about 15 MPG with mixed driving and a heavy foot on a 91 with 4" lift and 31s and stock gearing. My dad used to drive a blazer on 35s he got like 7mpg I consider myself fuel efficient.

When I bought my Jeep it had 2 electric fans on it. I put the original clutch fan and shroud back on it due to overheating problems while sitting still. I can tell no difference in the mileage. Our 4.0 is torquey, a belt driven fan won't effect it's mileage anymore than the extra pull the alt will have. Power is power. It all still comes from the engine.

Wonder if XJs left the factory when new with the hood popped and on the safety latch to prevent over heating? LOL.....hope the latch continues to hold.
Well when the latch doesn't hold it sucks. Your cowl gets smashed in hood pulls the hinges forward doesn't let the hood close easily and the hood gets beat up you break the plastic cowl piece and then you have a lot of work to do when it could have been prevented by doing it the right way first. If you switch to a dual electric fan make sure the cfm ratings will be enough to keep your engine cool. Oh and Look at summit racing there's a nice selection of fans on there.

Make sure if you do go ahead and go with and e-fan you buy a good name brand that way you know that the listed cfm's are accrate any of the fans from e-bay site's,etc are just cheap knock-off's with lower than claimed cfm's. Check this site out for a great set of fan's,http://www.ffdynamics.com/index.htm
