[QUOTE=exasemech;3727340 I would look really hard for places where the exhaust system may be hitting the frame [/QUOTE]
A common place for that is where the exhaust pipe crosses over the transmission cross member. It's most noticeable when in gear or under load. It's caused by bad motor or trans mounts letting the mount droop.
Sounds and smells like Catalytic , but then again it can be costly but not as much as transmission.
yea it finally stopped snowing and raining here so today im gonna get under there and give the CAT a few taps with a rubber mallet and see if i hear anything rattling around in there. Even though im selling it id like the issue to be NOT drive train related. but if the CAT seems ok, it likely is the rear diff i think, but i do have a few other things to check! Thanks for the input!

Actually the exhaust was a **** show when i got it. The mount you have pictured there, (mine is a little different so im guessing thios is an older XJ in the pic) the peg on the exhaust is rusted away and the exhaust has been sitting on the cross member the entire time i have owned the Jeep. It is ghetto rigged with a metal strap and zip ties through the rubber hanger so full weight isnt on the crossmember i dont think, but it is def a mess. Exhaust was lower on my fix list since it wasnt causing any issues. Was planning to tackle iot over this summer. But, because of this rigged up mess, the muffler is closer to the driveshaft than it should be, but it was never hitting it. That said, now that the weather has cleared, im going to check to see if there are any signs of it hitting. Would be nice if this was the issue cuz its way better than rear diff or transfer case issue. Motor mounts have been checked and are good. The trans mount though may be shot. When i sometime put the Jeep in gear, if im on a slight incline, i would hear a ping typw sound which from research and a couple of friends input, i determined is likely the Transmission Mount. I do have a replacement one, but havent put it in yet. Its easy enough to do so i may do that before selling.
i just wanted to let everyone know i appreciated all the help while owning the XJ, and it has now been sold. You all are great and if i ever end up with another XJ i will surely be back!
