I need you thoughts on my auto tranny
Recent history: I was towing a Pontiac Solstice from Sacramento to Reno in late Sept. It was a hot day; that's one hell of a hill: and my tranny was past due for servicing - sort of a perfect storm. Overheated everything and abandoned the tow (at least with my 96 Country with 152k miles) half way up the hill. The Cherokee drove on to Reno just fine and I serviced the transmission within a day or so. The shop actually filled and drained 3 times. They were pretty concerned about the appearance of the fluid that I drove in with.
Over the past 2 months, the tranny seems to work just fine with the exception that it wants to get in different gears or different torque converter configurations when conditions do not warrant. Specifically, when it is operating normally on level roadway, it has started to "shift down" just slightly at 60 mph - the rpms go from around 1950 to around 2200 - probably not a gear shift but maybe losing the lockup on the torque converter?. Interestingly, after it downshifts or loses the lockup, I can push down a little more on the accelerator and it will go be to the proper rpm meaning that it has shifted back to the higher gear or the TC has locked back up again.
Also, at low speeds (say 10 mph) it tends to want to downshift if the accelerator is pushed any distance at all - noticeably more so than before the towing mistake. I would say the occurances are coming with more regularity as time goes on.
Beyond those two annoyances, the transmission seems to operate normally. Anyone got a theory on what's going on and whether the transmission will get better (fat chance?) or shoot craps.
Thanks in advance.
Larry
