Default I need some help please..

Im new to this forum and new to jeeps. I have a 1988 cherokee pioneer. Today i was out plowing and the motor started sputtering and lost power (it did not die but came close). I tried to make it home and it started to pour blue smoke out so i pulled over and looked to see if i could find anything but everything looked normal. I let it cool down and tried to make it home but when i went to pull out i heard a popping noise from either the tranny or transfer case, and it lost front wheel drive. I ended up getting a tow home from a tractor but when i was rolling down the road behind it i could still hear the popping noise over the noise of the tractor. I have a feeling i messed up the transfer case but i would like some other opinions on it.
Thanks for everyones help -BrokeNow08

What kind of plowing are you doing? The XJ's are not built for heavy duty or professional plowing...removing snow out of your driveway is fine, but anything else would require a full-framed vehicle. Blue smoke = oil consumption/burning. If you lost your front axle, you probably smoked it. Confirm location of sound (front of vehicle or @ TC) and go from there.

I'm only doing my driveway. I took some time to check it out yesterday and I think I messed up the transfer case. Everything works fine in 4wd low but I only get the rear wheels spinning in 4wd high and the is a noise coming from underneath still. How hard would it be to rebuild the transfer case? Would it be better to just buy a new one?
Thanks for your help- BrokeNow08
