i need a no bs assessment
So I have a rear main seal leak and I've been reading post on how to do it. I see it's alot Easier than other cars, since you don't have to take off the tranny. But I was just wondering how long it would take and would it be easier to just pay someone???

Plan 4-8 hours basic hand tools.. You are absolutely POSITIVE that the leak is NOT coming from the valve cover or Oil filter areas. Hate to see another Jeeper waste a day doing 30 minutes work.

My local shop quoted $195 to replace rear main. Napa sells them for $32. Its not a hard job...just depends on how valuable your time is I guess.

195 bucks to do it? I would pay that much to have it done. The seal is 30 something, six quarts of oil and a filter will be about 25 bucks, oilpan gasket somewhere around 40 bones, totally worth paying to have it done for you with some sort of warranty.

I have done it twice and would gladly pay up to 300 for someone else to deal with it.
My tip is ... don't use RTV! Either use the Mopar crap or Loctite 518.

I agree it comes down to what you need more, your time or your money. I intend to do it myself this summer but I want the knowledge as well as I will change the oil pump too. So I may end up spending the same amount but its just a preference, hey I may never want to do it again!!
