I just finished reading a previous thread about switching front seat cushions but there seemed to be a difference of opinions. Cruiser54 said seat cushions can be switched and ltljon said his 1999 Cherokee was different. Before I remove both seats I would like to positively know if I can switch my 1999 Cherokee front cushions.
Not understanding what you mean by "seat cushions".
Foam, seat cover, or foam with the seat cover?
Then bottom or back and same questions about the foam.
I am talking about switching left to right and right to left. I should of explained my take on seat cushion better. It's what your but sets on, foam, springs and material. I hope it's attached to the mounting frame that is bolted to the floor in a way it can be removed.

Base, no.
Frame that the bottom seat cover and foam sit in that attaches to the base no.
Bottom seat cover and foam itself yes. Kinda.
Take a little Mickey Mousing.
And when I say Mickey Mousing I mean using zip ties.
Shot of a passenger side foam and seat cover that I turned into a driver's side.
Also realize now that the carpet that was against the console is showing on the outside now.
I solved that by using seat covers.
With the backs I new the cover will swap no problem.
Thinking the foam would.
But the frame inside there it all attaches too will not.
But typing all this made me think of one thing that I don't know.
If a passenger side seat could be bolted to a driver's side base.
And vice versa.
But not only would the carpet be showing on the outside if you did that the handle for the backward lean would be against the console.
Assuming it would even fit let alone let you get at it.
I don't think the holes in the frame that the foam and bottom seat cushion sits in would line up with the base but.....
Thanks Ralph for your time, effort and information. Your latter comment about not knowing if a passenger seat could be bolted to the driver's side base and the drivers seat to the passenger side base is the answer I'm looking for.
OK, I'm a bit confused about the real question but here's what I've done on my '88. The driver side backrest frame cracked and I had to take is somewhere to get welded. In the meantime, I took the passenger side and mounted it to the driver side base. So the bases do not interchange, but the cushions with frames did. Just to be clear, at no time did I mount my driver side seat components to the passenger side, but the mounting holes all look the same. As noted above a few things end up on the wrong side. My seats recline so the lever was on the "wrong side". On the seat cushion cover, there's a loop to hold the buckle end of the seat belt. That ends up on the wrong side too. In my case, I also had power seats so the holes for the seat controls were on the wrong side. Rather than redrill, I simply let the control dangle until my seat back was repaired.
More recently, I scored a few seat cushions and extra seat covers at my local salvage yard. I pulled the covers off the 4 bottom cushions (salvage and my originals), carefully inspected the foam and frames and picked the best 2. Put everything back together so all doo dads end up on the correct side. This time I did redrill the holes for the seat control.
You don't need to remove the base to get the cushions off. There are 4 bolts that hold on the bottom seat cushion from below. You may need to slide the seat forward or rearward to get better access. Once the bottom is off, there are 2 nuts and 2 bolts that hold the backrest on.
Pics below. I took the bases out so I could clean the carpeting better as well as inspect/lube the mechanism.
This only shows the 2 rear seat cushion bolts. You can look under the front and see the others.
Once the bottoms off, you can see the backrest attachment hardware.
My recent score. All the cushion covers cleaned up very nicely. The colors match but the pattern is a bit different. It nice having a seat that doesn't wobble when I drive.
