any truth behind the sticker on the valve cover being a good indicator on the engine mileage?? i mean i know its a gamble either way but are there jeeps out there with 60 or 70k with a worn sticker or any with 200k and a good sticker? mine now is just white kinda with no writing on it and i have 198250.

You're about an hour from where I'm at and I know there are a couple salvage yards close by that have 4.0L motors. I also think there's a place in Covington, Pa that has a good selection and they're probably only about 20 to 30 minutes away from you. Have you checked there?

The Ink still being on the sticker just means nobody wiped it with gas or carb cleaner. I wiped away the faded, unreadable #s off the sticker on my moms 01, and it didnt change the way it runs. Wiped them off when she had about 75,000 miles in it when she first got it in 2007, and it now has 105,??? miles with absolutely no performance decrease or increase whatsoever. If you really want a good, quick clue about a motor, twist the Oil cap off and look inside at the rocker arms. If clean, then probably had good service. If underside of cap has gunk, and rocker arms have gunk, then bad service. WATCH out for milky residue on the underside of cap. That would be a clue to a blown head gasket, and maby toasted bearings from said blown head gasket.

Yes wrecked but obviously well maintained vehicles in a junkyard are always what one should look for. My brothers Caravan needed a transmission and we kept looking and everytime he saw one with low miles he wanted to grab it but I would say.."There's no body damage on this thing and it has 140,000 miles on it. There HAS to be something wrong with either the engine or transmission."...Finally we found a clean inside and out Caravan which had the whole side caved in from a wreck and I said, "This is the one!"..Long story short transmission was perfect and still going strong...Keep searching and go back to the yards often as we missed a few chances by getting there a week after something new had arrived.

Can I ask why? It would be much easier to find/replace or give you advice if we knew what was wrong with the original engine.
