Agreed. I have had 2 XJs and a WJ puke a CPS, and no code was ever thrown. The WJ would jsut randomly die, as the OP describes. Then it would start right up again.

Until it didn't.

No codes, and never saw a problem with the tachometer. (I"m assuming that;s what you meant by "RPM gauge".)

given the Crank Sensor can fail without a code, imo it would be helpful to establish what code is actually being generated, assuming the engine check light is illuminating,
be a shame to keep changing crank sensors when the problem was the cam sensor for instance

And that CPS..... If it was not NGK/NTK, it's probably your problem.

But check your grounds.
It might have a new good working cps in it now? The odds of that are actually pretty good, since it was replaced. Something could be wrong shorting the cps connection somewhere, to keep in mind? Also, aftermarket cps sensors have a lot of problems with them. I will only reccomend to use a Mopar branded one for a cps sensor when/if it needs replacing.

It seems like starting at the most basic principles fundamental for operation is maybe the way to go? I would begin at the battery itself.

Check those four stupid wires that ground to the dip stick mount. Take them off, clean them, check how good the ring terminals are attached to the wires. Clean the stud with brake cleaner and a scotch bright, as well as all the connectors before putting back together, and spray a good silicone spray all over it after you get it together.

If it was a non-Mopar CPS, the chances of it still being bad are rather high. It can't be assumed to be good.

I agree. Best to verify the CPS if getting a crank no-start condition, or if it is shutting down on you.. Scanner for cranking rpm, looking for spark, or using a multimeter to check the cps is showing as proper is good information to know.

Non-Mopar sensors may be faulty when new. They may not work correctly right out of the box. This seems to be the case many times, and is solidly agreed upon!

With the motor running and the hood open, grab the wiring harness across the top of the firewall under the windshield wipers....
SHAKE THE HECK OUT OF IT!
If it shuts down the wires are worn inside. Happened to both of my last 2 XJs.
