Default i have a dumb question

are there gaskets for differentials? i would think there would be but mine seem to be sealed with rtv. I really want to change the fluid in them tonight, but all the autoparts stores are closed.

Yes, RTV works just fine. I'd recommend keeping a can of Right Stuff on hand. It's the shizz!

You can put an HO motor in an older XJ but, it isn't easy. Probably just as easy and about the same cost to stroke out and warm up your Renix motor.

I don't think I would use caulking. Would not hold up to heat or liquid after time.

i have a 90 with a 94H.O. installed.
it was installed by an auto shop from the previous owner.
apparently, they had to use the intake from the 90.
quite frankly, i've had no real problems with it, except for the oil filter. they removed the 90* elbow, so now it's a bit of a pita, but it runs great.
if i ever had to do any troubleshooting, i'd probably be lost tho.

oh, and black rtv. just be sure you use a wire brush and get all the old rtv off the diff/cover.

I would to agree whole heartedly that the HO 4.0 is a much better motor. I've dealt extensively with the Renix 4.0 in my son's 87 and very little with my 91 4.0 HO.
Just all of the associated problems with the "POS Cooling System"...and it's ability to leak all over and corrode and destroy other componants. As long as the cooling system is working it runs like a champ.

The cooling system is an easy upgrade tho.

I know it's just all the basic pieces that fail that cause my frubtration like the water pump and water neck gaskets leaking hot coolant all over the serpantine belt, turning it to mush and the heater control valve leaking hot coolant all over the starter and starter connections causing trouble down there. Nothing I can't live with, just small frustrations.
