I have a 99 cherokee sport. Alternator was replaced the day i bought her and installed a new battery today. She cranked right up and ran with no problems until i let her sit for a few hours. When i turn the key all the interior lights function, the headlights will turn on and the radio works but the engine is non-responsive. Its getting power but the engine will not even attempt to to turn over. NO RESPONSE FROM THE MOTOR AT ALL. HELP!

Either the Starter took a crap or a fuse/relay went bad. I would start with checking the relay.
Just take one from something that does work and swap it into the starter's spot.

Try putting it in neutral and then start it. Just encountered this with my Jeep. Apparently its pretty common.
If that works, the neutral safety switch should be cleaned.

If you hold the key over, and jiggle the shifter in park or neutral and it starts, it's your NSS. http://bc4x4.com/tech/2010/jeep-neut...ty-switch-nss/

#1 is neutral safety switch
#2 CPS
#3 camshaft sensor?
For NSS see the above. Cleaning works, IF you get it of the shaft in 1 piece. Some do, some dont, like mine. Do you have backup lightsx working? they are associated with the NSS as well. if they dont come on when in reverse, and you r able to start in Neutral but not in park, I'd say thats where u should start, the NSS.

Tap starter with hammer while some one trys to start it see what happens .
Thanks, I'll pull out the NSS this weekend and clean it up. The link above is amazing and seems simple enough. Once i wiggled the shifter and tried again she would crank right up so im confident this is the culprit. Appreciate the help and cant wait to work on my new baby some more.

Before you give it a go, soak the shaft a few times in some WD 40, or you guys have something called PB Blaster. Will increase the chance of getting it off. Be patient, the threaded parts that hold the nut that you will use to lever it off the shaft are weak. I ended up breaking two and had to go for a new NSS.
