Lol... I knew the joke wouldn't wind up coming out to be understood correctly.... Guess I should have said, ladder and then hop in. Ah nevermind.
Yakima is the best type of mount that I'm aware of for kayaks, followed by Thule.

A other oil change today, but with Castrol GTX 10-40, Mopar filter and a can of restoreusa.com
Yup that engine restore stuff works like I've heard, much quieter and a tad smoother running.
While I didn't have any horrid sounds from under the hood I wanted to try to make the motor better without spending big $$$.
I was going to do the axle(s) oil change, but autozone is charging $20.99 a bottle for the Mobil1 75W-140LS. Is that normal? So I held off til I can get a better price.
Geeze that's over $80 for fluids

Yup, another update...
Changed the rear end oil today.
Had fun dodging the rain, but all was well til I painted the cover-- cheap paint does NOT look good.

I'll probably leave it til I can afford a nice cover with a drain in it.
I filled it up with Mobil1 75w-140LS, took two bottles but I'll double check tomorrow before I drive to see if it needs more once it settles.
Rather easy to clean the surfaces, wire wheel on a cordless drill, 3 cans of brake cleaner and a happy C8.25. It was not bad in there, but without a doubt needed to be changed.

Just for future reference: If your going to go through all that bother next time remove the wheels & drums, pull the axles and replace the seals. If they are not leaking now, they surely will. Takes an extra couple of minutes.
(ETA: FYI you may want to move this to chat or a build thread, you constantly bump it to the first page in tech, & shift others questions down.)

good tip, but I'll wait for next time to do the seals along with the diff cover.
As for the moving of my thread, if a Mod wants to, that's fine- Just inform me where it's going to.

Not sure if this has been covered or not, 18 pages is a LITTLE TOO MUCH for me to read through, but just because you bought her from the South doesnt mean there isnt rust. Most XJ's floor pans rust out the the IN SIDE, so from the outside you cant tell. They have a really nice undercoating on them so they always look good from underneath. I pulled my carpet last summer and the floors were so rotten that they were actually being held together by the undercoating.
Most XJ owners are outdoors type people, which means fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, etc. Get in and out with soaked feet a few times and that carpet wont dry, hence the rot. Plus theyre prone to leaking in a few areas around the dash.
Only way to tell is to pull a few pieces of trim and roll back the carpet.
Congrats on your new Jeep, it looks nice. Im currently looking for another '99 too.

The guy I bought it from said it was rated for 1000lbs. But I highly doubt that, 500 seems reasonable. As for keeping it level... how it is, I didn't do anything other then put it on. lol

The previous owners were not outdoor people, very clean, very caring and just used it for transportation. I know because that's what they said to me.
No leaks, no problems and no rust. I did my homework.
As for the amount of pages, I am documenting so anyone could hopefully find some useful info and apply it.
