Hydraulic pull back ram for recovery
What do you all think about using a 10 ton pull back ram with a hand pump as a cheap recovery option? It seems like nobody has ever tried something similar, are there some drawbacks that I am overlooking?

That's cool, but I think that due to such a short stroke, it prolly wouldn't be that effective. Hydraulics are soooo awesome though. They really do open a world of imagination

I think it would be way to slow... 3 ton block and tackle 99 bucks... would be better...and you can use it for alot more things then just pulling your jeep out...

You can buy a new Smitty Built 8000 lb winch for 299 new. Craigslist you can find used around 100-150. Why spend 60 for the cylinder and then still need to buy a pump?

I'd just go with a come-along for a cheap recovery system, sounds like it'd work about the same, and you wouldn't have to worry about maintaining a hydro pump, just my opinion, or get a buddy with a bigger, badder rig with a tow strap!, lol, that's what I do, my recovery system is an old solid axle chevy with 8" lift, 406 small block sitting on 38" TSL's, alot easier on the wallet than a winch, lol.

Yes, you should always wheel with someone so you have help to pull you out, but I go wheeling a lot, so sometimes I wheel alone. That is why I have really good recovery equipment.
That's a good find on the hoist Hommer. I think I'll get one of those. There are some for $70 shipped.

Yes, you would, but then you would have something that would work. That is always a good thing when you are stuck, and it is dark or getting dark, and home or help is a long way off.
