Default 1989 Jeep Cherokee Leaf Spring Question

Hello everyone, I am brand new to the forum.

I have a 1989 jeep cherokee xj. Right now i am looking into replacing my rear leaf springs because they are shot. The rear of the jeep sags down in the back a lot.

I am wanting to upgrade to a little more of a heavy duty leaf spring set. A friend told me that the leaf springs out of a explorer would bolt right in, and they have a 1250# load rating. If i remember correctly the cherokee has a 850# rating for the leafs.

Would this work? Are there other options? I am pretty new to owning a jeep, and so I am learning.

I am also very open to other idea's and thoughts as well.

Thanks for the help.

Well, if you want to upgrade, they have upgrade kits for XJ's, unless you're planning on buying used ones or something......?

I have looked at the upgrade kits from rough country and i just talked to one of there sales reps a few minuets ago. I can buy a new set from them for $300 both sides.

I found the stock explorer sets for $150 new. I figured if i could save $150 i would, but if it wont work then I will go with the rough country set.

like i said, I am pretty new to all of this.

I'm thinking about changing my leafs too. I'll keep an eye on this thread to see what the popular consensus is.

tried looking this topic up on other forums, sounds like two opinions

A: Won't work at all
B: Not worth it, and just get the heavier duty ones MADE FOR the XJ.

Yeah....I suppose if you're gonna do it, do it right.

I was looking at the 6.5" HD ones at Rusty's. Like $369 with shipping. Got a local spring shop that will do the install for $269.

I wonder how those springs chock up against the others? Any recommendations on after market springs that are bolt on?

thanks

I looked a set of explorer leafs a couple days ago. They are the same width, and same length, so i am thinking that it should work. I just wanted to ask before spending the money.

I guess i am just trying to think out side of the box a little.

Are you going to lift your Cherokee 6.5 inches? That is a lot of lift? If you want heavier duty springs you can go with an OME heavy duty spring pack or maybe Rusty's.

Nope, not trying to go 6.5". I have a 3" lift, and so I am trying to stay in that 3"-4" on the rear.

Sounds like this is not a good idea, i will just go with the HD leaf pack from rough country.

Thanks guys.

Buy the heavy duty set from quadretec and dont SCREW around with the junkyard crap, they will give a bit of lift and wont settle out flat at all, and be done with it.

I've said it before. I'm a newb Jeep mechanic so maybe I'm not thinking this through.

These are the springs I was looking at

Now that you mention it, if they do indeed lift it 6.5", that is a lot of lift.

Yea, those are springs to lift the rear 6.5 inches. If you want a little lift in the rear these guys have 2" lift springs and you can get them in a heavy duty spring rate.
For 121.73 each plus shipping the price isn't bad either.

i have read a ton of stuff on cherokees... never have a heard of running explorer springs and them fitting... just because there the same width and length doesnt mean they will fit... its more important to get the right measurement from the front mount to the axle...

read up on the S-10 bastard pack... its comes out to 3 or 4 inches... i did it... but i havent finished building the 9in yet to see how much i gained... lol... i got my s-10 spring packs for $30...
