I have a 2000 xj and all of a sudden my hvac controls don't work. Where ever I set the position the heat only comes out by the windshield. Is it a problem with the actual controls? How to fix?

My buddies TJ did this and it turned out to be a little plastic arm on the flapper that redirects the air had broken off. Although I'm sure there's other reasons this could happen.

Do you know where the flapper was located?

Hmmm. He says it was easy to get at just underneath the edge of the dashboard on his TJ. I suppose the XJ uses a similar setup but have no idea where the flapper would be. A Haynes or Chiltons manual may help. Sorry.

Check vacuum lines for cracks running from vacuum canister in front passenger bumper to intake manifold and check to make sure that the line coming through the firewall by the hvac box is plugged into the line.

More then likely you got a bad vacuum line under the hood going to the firewall
