Question Hub conversion

I've done some searching and found a few threads about this topic. I want to convert my automatic hubs to manual lock in. The threads I've found said it was just as easy as buying the new hubs and switching them out.

I need some help though, is it really that easy?

What hubs does everyone recommend? Part Numbers?

And if it's really that easy why are all the "hub conversion kits" close to $1000. You can pick the hubs up for under $200!

Please help anyone who can answer those questions!
Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't call it "EASY" by any measure. And I doubt you find it cost effective. WHY do you want to do this? Personally, I like the unit bearings, one single item to replace and no constant need to check the bearing tightness. And yes, I carry one as a spare.

Because when I lock a manual hub into place, I know it will work.

If you get the early jeep knuckle, spindle, hub, locking hubs and axle stub shaft you can do it. but you will have two bolt patterns. You could use Bronco II stuff, but the hubs are not very strong.

Just the ones I mentioned. Outside of that, it is the conversion kit.

OK, you don't have auto hubs on a Jeep. The hubs are engaged all the time. So unless something is broken (check your ring gear and pinion and make sure the side gears are all engaged adn complete), I don't see the advantage. The splines on the axle shaft go into the unit bearing/hub and drive the hub.

If you aren't sure your 4x4 is working, then check to see if your transfer case is engaging. I don't think your 96 XJ has a center axle disconnect in the front, but if you do, check to see if your vacuum lines are connected and in good shape.

It could probably be done if you could machine the spindles from a front D35 equipped Ranger, but I think the mounting circle for the Ranger is a lot smaller than the opening in the D30 knuckle. If I recall, a lot of the rest of the small parts in the Warn kit are Ranger replacement parts. But then you are stuck with oddball axle shafts on both sides. Not stock D30 or Ranger D35 axle shafts. But then as mentioned the stock locking hubs aren't real strong, though there is a replacement available from Warn that is considerably stronger. The Ranger guys also refer to it as the Jeep hub...
