Default How to tell if my 4wd is engaged?

The 4wd light comes on in the dash but the truck doesn't really feel like 4wd is engaged (1987 jeep Comanche Laredo)! Is this light just linked to the shift lever in the cab or is it somehow actuated my motion of the axels engaging?

It's actuated by the vacuum that is being sent to a switch on the firewall as it goes to the front axle shift motor.

Take a look at the passenger side rear of your front axle housing. A vacuum harness should be plugged in there. They are problematic, can strand you, and were eliminated in late 1991. You can convert yours in about 1/2 hour using the following link:

Find you a nice little hill that you can't make it up in 2wd. Proceed until you can't go any farther. Shift into 4wd. If you go farther, it's working. If you don't go any farther then it's not working. TA DA

Either that or shift into 4wd and drive in a tight circle in a parking lot. You'll notice a difference if it's working. I promise.

Shift it into 4wd and take a tight circle in your yard or a gravel lot. If the front end wants to bite and grab then it's engaged. If you can make a smooth tight circle with no grabbing and jerking then it isnt engaging.

How about jack all 4 wheels off the ground. Find four friends. Have each of the friends hold on to each tire with all their might. Start the Jeep, put it in 4 low. Put it in drive and stomp the gas. If all 4 of your friends are bleeding then 4wd is working.

Has anyone done that d30 cad bypass? What did you use to remove the clamps? And does this lock me in 4wd?
