Default How to replace water pump in 88 Cherokee

Hey fellow Jeepers i looked under my hood today and realized there was a little leak on my water pump like towards the top where their is a little silicone sealent like a little tiny dab of antifreeze leaking out.

To my knowledge my water pump isnt shot "yet" since my jeep holds a good temperature and consistent but want to fix it before it gets worst. Im still new to my jeep and still learning whats what under the hood is their a detailed thread/writeup on here how to replace the waterpump?

Ive searched the web but got nothing really good..

Also does anyone know the part# for the water pump and does it come with a gasket or do i just use High Temp RTV sealent?

Thanks guys

Here is a write up:

It will pretty much be the same process for your 88.

And as far as part#, go on rockauto.com and look for the part. You will have many options and probably won't find a better price anywhere. And yes, most, if not all water pumps that are sold will include a gasket

been there done that. i would buy a new one. I had put a used one on mine and it kept leakin. I was like wtf. Then i had realized the wheep hole on both of them was bust. So i got a new one and no more leaks. Its not bad at all. Get a good gasket. I didnt have to take much off to get to it, Good luck!

When you are getten after that belt tensioning bolt below the power steering pump, don't force it! There is a bottom bolt on the pump, hard to see, that's easy to miss. One guy stripped, or busted (I forget), his adjuster because he didn't have the pump free.

Since my motor mounts are shot, I'm pretty sure I'd have a real time with that fan shroud. If I remember right, its a real hassle even with the engine where it belongs.

Don't rush it! One messed up bolt can really ruin your day. I might spray them ahead of time, also I might do it while the engine is still a bit warm.

I guess everybody knows, pets like antifreeze, and it can kill them.

So since the water pumps come with a gasket should i still use High Temp RTV on both sides of the gasket? when inserting the new water pump on the engine?

If you torque it right, you shouldn't need it. At least, I didn't. But you may want to for good measure

High temp? You planning on incinerating it? Just keep it thin so it doesn't squeeze out and end up in your heater core or something.
