mine broke after 216K how do i replace the drive gear is it a really big job and is there anywhere locally i can pick one up i really dont want to take it to a tranny shop if i dont have too


its a 2001 cherokee sport

 

I think you just have to remove the tail shaft housing on the transfer case to get to the gear.

 

i think its two bolts into the tail shaft housing and the gear pops right out of it...super easy

 

one 1/2 inch bolt. Did it today. Speedometer gear takes like 2 minutes. I am not sure if I seated mine wrong as now it's leaking like hell. I'm going to grab a new gasket tomorrow, if that doesn't work, I'm using a touch of RTV when I reseat the speedo gear housing. I took out my 34 tooth gear and replaced with a 32 as I run 31" tires. If you need a 34 tooth gear, let me know - I'd get it to ya cheap. 3.55 gears on NP231. It's a short shaft gear

 

I am talking about the internal gear inside the transmission and sorry but i forgot to mention its not 4x4

 

The steel gear on the output shaft? Just yank the tailhousing & it's right there.

Well found the gear for 50.00 at the dealership and there is a spacer infront of it that is no longer in production but some dealerships still have them they cost about 15.00 so I picked that up too gonna try n get it done today n get some pics too
