Is it completely empty? You might want to leak check before you just dump in refrigerant.

Just take it to a shop and have somebody that is trained in the proper proceedures do it. If you need to add refridgerant, you got a leak that needs to be fixed. You can't fix it without evacuating the system and recovering any refridgerant that is in the system, and you can't put any refridgerant into the system after a repair without vacuuming the system down to 30hg in order to rid it of moisture. I'm pretty sure you do not have any of the REQUIRED equipment needed. It is a federal crime to vent any type of refridgerant into the atmosphere.

As an A/C tech I can't stress it enough, get some one who knows what there are doing to put there gauges on the system, and then go from there. Just because it's not blowing cold air doesn't mean it needs a charge, there are dozens of other things that can be wrong, and just randomly throwing gas into the system with out knowing anything about it is a crap shoot at best.

mk. yea i already did it and i had all the equipment. you cant expect a 15 year old vehicle to keep the refrigerant in for that long can you?? its working tip top shape, well see for how long though.

When was the last time you had to recharge your refridgerator? The automotive A/C system is not designed to lose refridgerant ever. I really doubt you had the required equipment to do the job correctly.

I agree with all above. if you can't evacuate the a/c system it was a waste. a/c is something that should't be done by a back yard mechanic... it is not healthy for it to be vented. overnight or over 2-5 years... i work on a.c systems that have been running for 5+ years easy that have not lost a drop... if its leaking it's a problem...
