Jeep Cherokee 1984-1996: How to Recharge A/C
Is your A/C system not cooling as it used to? Learn how to recharge your system here.
This article applies to the Jeep Cherokee XJ (1984-1996).
Your Jeep's AC system is complex and uses many different parts as well as components to keep you cool when you're behind the wheel. The refrigerant that is stored in the the A/C's compressor is the key ingredient that makes the air flowing into your cabin cold. As with most other components in your Jeep, the refrigerant known as "R-134a" can slowly evaporate over time and stop cooling the system. Follow this step-by-step guide to learn how to recharge the A/C system in your Jeep.

Material Needed
- 12 oz can of R-134a refrigerant with charging hose
Step 1 – Locate the A/C hoses
The couplings where the R-134a hose is connected to are near the main canister in the upper left-hand corner of the engine bay.
- Locate the A/C low pressure service port.
- Remove the protector plastic cap.

Step 2 – Recharge the system
Now that the cap for the low pressure service port has been removed, you must connect the charging hose. Follow these steps:
- Start the engine.
- Switch the A/C on full fan speed and MAX cool.
- Shake the R-134a can.
- Connect the charging hose of the refrigerant can to the low pressure service port. You will hear a puncturing sound when it seals.
- Pull the trigger on the can while pointing it down to make sure it flows properly.
- Make sure the hose is getting colder and the can is getting lighter.

Step 3 – Wrap up
- Once the can is empty, disconnect the charging hose.
- Then replace the protector plastic cap.
Note
It could take up to a day or more for a completely empty A/C system to lubricate and start cooling again.
