Default How to pull the instrument pod?

Hey all... all my gauges stopped working the other day. I want to pull the pod and check the connection, but am unsure how to go about it. Can someone provide detailed instructions on how to go about this? Pictures would be helpful too. T.I.A.

What year?

My 87 and 89 were easy. Gently remove the trim around the cluster, remove the 4 or so screws, gently pull it out.

Mine is a '96 with tilt wheel which added a couple extra steps to the job but no big deal. These may help:

Unplug negative on battery.

Pry off the center console plastic frame. It should pop right off. Unscrew the four screws you see. Three screws for the kick plate under the steering column. Remove kick plate and plastic boot.

Feel with your hand for a small push button on the headlight switch body. It's the white button in this picture. Push the button and pull off the switch handle.

Now you can pry the plastic frame around the instrument cluster off. It may help to tilt your steering wheel all the way down.

Four screws and you can pull the cluster off.

Really wasn't a big deal. We're less than 2mins extra work. I had to unhook the connector under the steering column covers because the bezel had to come out that much further to clear the top of the dash. Also loosened the two panels to the right of the column for clearence. I pulled as much as I dared but it wouldn't clear at the top of the dash.

Gotta do it again sometime soon to see what's wrong with my flopping center vent.

And I thought Harleys were alot of up keep.

Oh yeah...it's a '98. Has the gauges and the tilt wheel. I just didn't know if there was a better place to start prying...top...bottom...side? From what I've read about it, it doesn't look too difficult once you get the bezel off. I didn't want to break any tabs off or anything by prying in the wrong place.

On the instrument cluster? No just pull straight back.

I changed some bulbs in my 1999 last weekend, honestly the worst part was the **** on the headlight switch.

3 screws on plastic trim under steering wheel, pull trim straight back
2 screws on metal knee guard, pivots down
Pop center plastic trim from bottom, pivots up (Can't leave tranny in Park)
Remove 4 screws under the center trim holding in the upper dash piece
Undo rubber piece under the steering wheel
Remove headlight ****
Pry under upper dash trim on both sides of steering wheel, trim piece pivots up, hinged along the seam at the top
Argue with tilt lever while removing trim
Remove 4 screws holding instrument cluster
Pull cluster straight back

Hope that helps some

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds easy enough. Before I tear into it, I have another question... I performed the gauge cluster self diagnosis test, and all the gauges and lights work during that. Do I still have a problem with the connection, or should I be looking elsewhere?

Check your fuses. Gauge lights in my 90 XJ stopped working, it turned out to be my parking light fuse.

It'll work until it doesn't want to work. Mine was intermittent and until I pulled the cluster and reseat it firmly, it'd drop out randomly while driving and show "noBus" on the gauge. Hasn't done it since I pulled the cluster and cleaned and reseat it.
