How to pull the ABS codes?

Default How to pull the ABS codes?

On my 1999 Cherokee Sport, my ABS light is on and I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to pull DTC?

I used the scan tool at Advance Auto and it says there are no error codes stored.

I did the "key on while holding tripometer button" method, and my dash cluster goes through it's little dance 1111111 -> 9999999 but again, it shows no codes. When it cycles to the nines, it then flashes the odometer mileage.

I guess I should be happy that I don't have any other problems. But I'd like to figure out what's up with the ABS. I actually prefer NOT having ABS, but if it's equipped, I would rather fix it and make the light go away.

Thanks for any help!

I don't think the ECU controls the ABS that why you cant get codes
check each wheel make sure the sensors is still connected
and check if the tone ring has dirt built up in it that will cause the ABS light to come one

check the fuses

Will do. Thanks!

I just got it, so I haven't pulled the wheels off yet to inspect things.

Are there any connectors to the ABS controller box or to a relay or anything that I should check and spray down with contact cleaner?

(locations of said parts would be appreciated!)

Codes are stored in the ABS ECU and according to the manual can only be accessed, read, or cleared using a DRB scan tool.

Meaning that I have to visit a Chrysler dealer in order to have this fixed?

I sort of have a strong aversion to ever paying anyone else to touch my vehicles. An extension of my questions: Can I bleed the brakes myself? If I keep the master cylinder reservoir full, is it safe to not use the DRB tool to cycle the ABS pump?

This all sounds hokey to me, since I can't fathom paying a dealer to do anything so simple for me.

Someone on here did a write-up thread on what was required to get rid of the ABS, and what was involved. It didn't seem like a very difficult procedure. I can't find it now though.

I don't know what kinda scanner you where using but I have a OTC scanner at work that tells me ABS codes in just about everything. I forgot what model it is but it cost a couple thousand with out the software. You sure that scanner reads ABS and not just only engine pcm?

Most aftermarket scantools (pro stuff, not the crap sold at auto parts stores) can communicate with the ABS on your XJ.

Since it's a 99, the ABS will communicate on the databus... said bus is available at the DLC for the scantool to read.

I know for a fact that the OTC Genesys and the Snap On MODIS can read all systems on your 99XJ.
