That is the most backwards way of doing it I have ever heard. You don't need to do this.

If your in 4hi, come to a stop, shift it straight into 4lo, and then profit. Chances are if your in 4hi your not going to fast anyways, so coming to a complete stop should not be an issue.

Believe it or not the manual from the factory suggests you be slowly moving.

But what do the engineers and designers know?

You dont have to turn the engine off. Like stated before, the manual says to slow down below 5mph and shift to 4lo.

Mine use to pop out also. Try adjusting it, it should work fine after that.
Sometimes when the Jeep is flexing it makes it pop out of 4lo. If you look at the linkage, you'll notice it pivots from the tranny to the unibody. So the difference in movement causes the linkage to pop out of 4lo. I came up with a solution for this. I made a plate to bolt it to the tranny and keep the pivot point moving with the tranny so no more diffrence in movement. Ill try and take a pic later today and post it so you can see what I'm talking about.

stop neutral let off brake so it can roll if needed even though it shouldnt have to. then put in 4 low and go!!!!

i have a transer case drop so i had to adjust my linkage it was easy. just lengthened the rod a little to help it stay in.

At the bottom of the pages you're reading is a 'forum jump' drop down where you choose the appropriate section for your question(s). Pick the one related to your question. When that page opens, up near the top you'll see the 'forum tools' option.. click on that and choose 'new post'.

Here is the pic I promised. The two long bolts you see is whats holding the plate to the top of the tranny.
Hope this helps you get an idea.
